Current NPOA Board of Directors
Northstar Property Owners Association is the governing body of the association and consists of 7 elected volunteers. They are elected by members of the association and serve 2 year terms with a 3 successive term limit. Want to learn more about our directors? For the last five years, Hester and I have been full time residents at Northstar. Prior to that, we have been coming to this mountain for over 30 years in summer and winter. Our four daughters learned to ski/snowboard here and we are now teaching our next generation the same. We are blessed with five grandchildren and soon, a sixth.
My work experience is all in High Tech. Most notably, I worked for Apple for over 10 years (the early days), both on the east coast and in Silicon Valley. I also managed sales and partner development on a global basis for DEC (now HP), Informix (now IBM), and several smaller companies focused on software development.
Now retired, Northstar is a wonderful place to relax and make use of the amazing facilities NPOA and Vail offer. There is truly nothing like Northstar!
When asked to run for the NPOA Board, I thought it would be a chance to use my 40+ years of business experience to assist and help guide the continued maintenance and enhancement of the NPOA facilities and community. I thank you for your vote of confidence.
Many years ago (34)! I met my wife, Ruthann in San Francisco and one of our first dates was a trip to Northstar. We both fell in love and fell in love with Northstar. I drove her crazy for years pestering her that someday we will own a condo. Well, a few years later and two boys later we were fortunate enough to have friends whose parents had a condo. Every weekend we packed two families into their small condo but
managed to make it work. A few years later we moved to London for work and upon our return to California we decided it was finally time to buy our own condo. We had a condo in Gold Bend and our family skied, snowboarded, hiked, golfed, swam and enjoyed the Lake and Northstar. In 2008 when our boys, Chris and John entered high school we sold the condo and bought a home on Skidder Trail. We have been so happy with our decision to become part of the Northstar family 33 years ago and I want to give back and hopefully encourage others to experience the terrific family values and lovely environment.
I have an MBA in International Business from St. Mary’s College of California. I have spent almost 40 years working in business development. I have worked for AT&T, Ernst & Young, Merrill Lynch, PIMCO, AIG and am currently a Principal Wealth Investment Director at Mercer focused on the Pacific Northwest Region, Northern California and Hawaii. My prior board experience includes having served on the Sutter Solano Health Board and I participated on the Finance Committee. I have also served in numerous capacities at Green Valley Country Club.
Born in Cleveland and raised in Buffalo and Chicago, I had only seen skiing on television until I came to California to attend graduate school in psychology and my classmates invited me to join them on the slopes. Having caught the bug, once I received my Ph.D., I picked Auburn to open my practice, as it is halfway between my two favorite places, San Francisco and Tahoe. My wife Candice and I brought our daughters to Tahoe throughout their childhood and found Northstar to be our favorite destination, so we bought a lot on Grouse Ridge in 2010 and built our vacation home here. We decided to move to Northstar full time, and we built our residence on Summit in 2020.
I was appointed to the North Tahoe Regional Advisory Coucil by the Placer County Board of Supervisors in 2014, as I wanted to give back to the community but also wanted to be involved and informed about what was happening in Tahoe. As Northstar’s representative on the Council, I have been attending and reporting to the Board at meetings since that time, and I was elected to the NPOA Board in 2024. I continue to serve on the NTRAC and still commute down to Auburn to practice my work as a psychologist with the court system, but I am looking forward to slowing down in the near future in order to be able to take full advantage of living in Northstar. Thank you for your support and trust in allowing me to represent you on the Northstar Property Owners Board! – Gene Roeder
My wife, Lee, and I have been Northstar condo owners since 2003, starting with a one-bedroom condo in Ski Trails and now owning a two-bedroom condo in Indian Hills. What began as a vacation retreat has become our primary residence. I served on the Board of Directors of both associations. We now split our time between Northstar and Kona, Hawaii, renting our condo
when we’re away, participating in the Placer County Short-Term Rental and Lease to Locals programs. I understand and appreciate the variety of ways owners use their properties.
I retired from the State of California, where I managed statewide initiatives focused on behavioral health and positive youth development services. I’m also certified by the Professional Tennis Registry and Professional Pickleball Registry and have served as a tennis professional and club manager at private clubs and at summer training camps, including here at Northstar! Besides loving to play tennis, I treasure each day I get to be on the mountain skiing!
I hope to meet you on the courts, on the mountain, or at a NPOA Board meeting! I welcome your input and feedback! – Dr. Jim Kooler
My family and I have been skiing at Northstar for over 15 years, and three years ago, we made the decision to move here full-time. I live here with my wife, Jill, and our two children, Henry and Chloe, who both attend Alder Creek Middle School.
I grew up in Spokane, WA, and studied computer science at Western Washington University. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work for several startups as well as major tech companies like Amazon, Yahoo, and Meta (Facebook).
I’m passionate about the outdoors, and I love how Northstar offers activities year-round, whether it’s skiing in the winter or enjoying the rec center in the summer.
As a member of the NPOA Board, I hope to continue focusing on the amazing amenities (like the rec center and pools/hot tubs) and look into ways we can leverage technology and AI to make NPOA the best HOA in Northern California.
I’m a longtime resident of Northstar, a place I proudly call home and hope to pass down as a lasting legacy for my family. Before making Northstar my full-time residence, I raised my family in the Bay Area, where I built a successful career in technology – specifically in software business development. I still maintain deep roots in the Bay Area, and my background has equipped me with the business acumen and strategic insight that I now look forward to applying to the work of the Northstar Property Owners Association.
In the winter, you’ll find me on the mountain as a ski instructor, sharing my passion for snow sports and the outdoor lifestyle. The rest of the year, I’m out hiking or mountain biking the beautiful terrain that makes Northstar such a unique and vibrant place to live. For me, this community represents not just a home, but a way of life – one centered on nature, family, and long-term stewardship.
A little bit about myself:
My wife (Debbie) and I have been married for 49 years. We are the proud parents of 2 children (Aaron and Sara) and 4 grandchildren (Aadon, Teagan, Josie, and Addison). We have owned a Ski Trails condo since the early 90s and have enjoyed everything that Lake Tahoe has to offer.
My wife and I are both retired, although with grandchildren involved in their sports (Baseball, Soccer, and Cheerleading) we seem to be busy all the time.
Feel free to reach out to me directly through the NPOA Staff.
Albert J. Roth
